He is annoyed at the housework being done at the Grange, Despite the chilly weather, Lockwood wishes to escape the disruption of his servant girl cleaning -hareton - unless heathcliff says he can have some - first assuming that the girl is Heathcliff's wife, and then that she is married to the young man, who he supposes to be Heathcliff's son.Heathcliff's daughter-in-law but her husband is dead, as is Heathcliff's wife.
The young man is Hareton Earnshaw. heathcliff thinks its more important for hareton to take care of the horses - the girl pretends to be a witch and joseph is religious -they laugh, the cook Zillah takes lockwood and says he can stay. Lockwood mistakes a pile of dead rabbits for her pet dog, causing her to sneer, 'a strange choice of favorites.' -He tells her that she is the proper person to have issued the invitation.He intends to make her regret choosing Hareton for a husband by making her fall in love with him.Hareton unexpectedly offers to escort Lockwood part of the way home - Cathy is Heathcliff's daughter-in-law, although her husband is dead.Insulted by Heathcliff's insistence that he be under supervision while at the Heights, Lockwood runs outside, grabs a lantern, and tries to leave.
